It's a good idea to do a detailed inventory of your home's contents every few years and keep a copy of the information in a safe place. Fire-proof boxes are good, but keeping your records off-site is better, possibly at a family members home or ideally in a safe deposit box. This will help show your insurer the extent of your loss and could prevent a bad situation from becoming even worse.
