In
nearby Penobsquis, “Potash
Corporation of Saskatchewan” operates an underground
mine excavating potash that is used mainly to produce
fertilizer. Most of this product is transported by rail
and truck to the "Port
of Saint John", and is then shipped to countries
on both sides of the Atlantic.
Sussex
Ginger Ale was originally bottled right here in Sussex.
Although it's no longer made here it's still a local
favorite.
There
are many larger cities and towns in New Brunswick, but
the first “Canadian Tire Store” in the province
opened right here in Sussex in 1936. |

Sussex
has a great and friendly downtown area with lots of
nice little shops and restaurants. Broad
Street alone offers a unique shopping experience and
features businesses such as a family bakery, a handmade
soap shop, a natural food store, and a hardware
store that's been operated by the same family since
1922. Downtown Sussex has several banks, book, music,
sports, craft supply stores, clothing stores, just to
mention a few.
The
Sussex area has lots of beautiful older buildings, the
Train Station, now the Visitor Information Center, the
Sussex Town Hall, and the Coach House (shown at left)
in Sussex Corner just to name a few.

The
“Worlds
Largest Lobster" statue is about 2 hours away
in Shediac, but it was actually constructed here in Penobsquis
by the late Winston Bronnum. Mister Bronnum is known for
many unique sculptures including the “Giant
Potato” in Maugerville, NB and “Jumbo
the Elephant” in St. Thomas, Ontario. This statue
"The Brokendown Race Horse" stands outside his
old shop in Penobsquis. |
